“Good value and location”

April 30th, 2012

We stayed for one night in a Western style room which included a bathroom. The room was small but for one night it didn’t really matter. We also booked the meals which included a Kaiseki dinner as well as a traditional Japanese Breakfast. The food was excellent and the price is reasonable. The staff at this Minshuku is very friendly although their english is limited. They will also store your luggage for the day if you have a late train connection. Coming from Hakone where we had a big Onsen (Japanese bath) at our premises, the Onsen at the Kuwataniya was really small and basic.

“Traditional family inn close to all the sights”

March 18th, 2012

This is a family inn located conveniently between Takayama train station and the major tourist areas of Takayama. The room was spacious and clean and had a fridge for any food purchases. There were shared toilets, and also hot-spring baths (one for men, one for women). They offer dinner and breakfast, but we only had the breakfast there, which was Japanese-style and delicious. Not much English was spoken by staff, but there was enough to get by with our smattering of Japanese. We were the only Western guests there which was a fun experience. This is not an extravagant place to stay, but is certainly a good budget traditional accommodation option.

Lovely host.

January 30th, 2012

Minshuku Kuwataniya is a lovely little place only minutes from Takayama station. The rooms are big and some look out onto the temple opposite. The mens and women’s baths are roomy and incredibly relaxing. The host is very efficient, warm and with her limited english she will explain anything you need to know including the different dishes of meal served. (Dinner and breakfast were amazing including local specialities and shouldn’t be missed!) Great value for money and I highly recommend borrowing the bikes that they have available.
The carpets in the hallways could probably do with being replaced but the rooms and dining rooms are beautiful. Free wifi.

Their service is also top-notch.

June 10th, 2011

This was our first trip to Japan - a special mother - daughter 21 day vacation. To ensure that my mother had the best time in Japan. I did extensive research about Japanese manners, culture, travelling tips, and accommodation.Takayama was our first stay, thanks to the highly recommended comments by past visitors on tripadvisor.com and japan-guide.com. Minshuku Kawataniya not only offers a very good price, their service is also top-notch. The owner is very kind and considerate. Since she knew that we were going to arrive in JR Takayama station at 22:00, she had arranged her husband to pick us up so we did not need to take a taxi or walk in the dark to her place. We stayed for 4day nights and enjoyed a very exquisit and elaborated dinner course. Since my mother does not like sashimi, the chef was kind enough to make alternative arrangement for her. We stayed in the Western-style twin en suite room. It is very spacious. Enough for us to store 3mid-size luggages. Wi-fi connection is weak but they offer free computer use at the lobby. Everyday the staff changes our towels and clean our room. I did not expect such service because I had read that most minshuku does not offer such service for sure.in here . The staff keep their rooms tidy spot-less. Defintely try their ofuro. They have 2 hot spring rooms. We had the pleasure of trying bath, on first and second floor’s. Second floor’s bath room is bigger and just amazing beautiful. After staying in the hot water (onsen) for 10 minutes longer, we could feel every part of our sore muscles and healed and relaxed. Minshuku Kawataniya is an ideal spot to stay of visiting Takayama. It’s rates are reasonable and service is like 3.5 star hotel. Great location as it is close to JR station. Miyakawa-Morning market. Hida kokubunji temple and several downtown tourist spots. All are within 10 minute walking distance. Best of all, the staff here can understand enough English to help us and answer our question. Although their English is not proficient, at least they can communicate enough to make us feel safe, welcome and contented.(^^)

Excellent place to stay in takayama. very close to center of town, and also good proximity to station. we didn’t eat the food so cant comment on that. Big flat screen tv, fridge , safe and really comfy futons. the onsen is a little bland though. Overall a decent choice - would stay again.
